Discover the OceanWith the Peninsula's Best
The waters around Tahiti Iti are among the most extraordinary in French Polynesia, and the least crowded. From the protected bays of the lagune to the open ocean off Teahupo'o, the peninsula offers a rare combination of marine biodiversity, dramatic underwater landscapes, and wild coastline that most visitors to Polynesia never reach.
Three specialist operators can pick you up at Villa Mitirapa, make these waters accessible at every level. Whale watching from late July through November.
Diving expedition
The reefs of Tahiti Iti are among the most pristine in all of French Polynesia. While the rest of the island draws crowds, the peninsula's coastline has been left largely undisturbed — its corals exceptional, its passes rich in marine life, and its dive sites spread across more than 60 kilometres of wild shoreline rarely shared with another boat.
Two specialist diving centres, each on a different coast of the peninsula, give you access to this underwater world from every angle.

Hiking Tahiti — Into the Wild with Heurii Explorer
The interior of Tahiti Iti is one of the least explored landscapes in French Polynesia — volcanic ridgelines, deep valleys, cascades, and a southern coastline of black basalt cliffs that no road will ever reach. Hitinui, founder of Heurii Explorer and a guide born and raised in Teahupo'o, leads half-day, full-day, and overnight hikes across the wildest parts of the peninsula, from the sea cliffs of the fenua aihere to the depths of the interior valleys. His Te Pari coastal trail is the signature route — a full day along the foot of the peninsula's dramatic southern cliffs, passing hidden caves, isolated coves, and landscapes that feel entirely outside of time. Beyond the trail, Hitinui carries the stories and mana of a place Polynesians have long called Fenua here hia te atua — the land loved by the gods.
Adventure · Half-day
Quad Biking into the Heart of Tahiti — Vaihiria Quad
Hidden at 473 metres above sea level, the Vaihiria valley is home to the only natural lake in Tahiti — a place of extraordinary beauty wrapped in legend, including the mythical eel Faaravainuu, said to be the origin of the coconut tree. Vaihiria Quad takes you there by quad bike, through rocky mountain tracks, past cascades and the Vaihiria blue lake, with a local guide who knows every story the valley holds. Half-day excursions run morning or afternoon, are suitable for the whole family from age 6, and include a welcome fruit juice and a fresh fruit snack on the trail.

DINING ON THE PENINSULA
Where to eat nearby
The peninsula punches well above its size when it comes to food. Within minutes of Villa Mitirapa, you will find the full spectrum of Tahitian culinary life: fresh poisson cru and grilled mahi-mahi at beachfront snacks, French bistro cooking at proper sit-down tables, Chinese-Polynesian fusion that has quietly shaped local cuisine for generations, and wood-fired pizza for evenings when simplicity wins. Taravao's evening roulottes alone are worth the trip: cold Hinano, steaming chow mein, plastic tables under the stars, and some of the most honest food on the island.
